Government Structure

    •     Carrying out the policies and ordinances of the Government
    •     Appointing certain boards and committees
  • Mayor and City Council are elected on a:
    •     Nonpartisan basis
    •     Concurrent four-year terms that begin in November of the election year

The Government provides a full range of services including general administration, planning and
zoning, public improvements, E911, police, fire, inspections, municipal court, streets and sanitation,
recreation, library and cultural events, and sewer.

Geography, Population, and History 

  • Incorporated in 1967
  • Located in Jefferson and Shelby Counties in north central Alabama
  • In 1968, its population was estimated at 410 and has grown to more than 83,000 today 
  • Sixth largest city in the state 
  • Approximately 48 square miles
